Dr. Antonio de Lecea

Antonio de Lecea is an Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the Basque Country University (UPV). He is also a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Washington-based Atlantic Council’s Global Business and Economics Program, and senior expert for an international consultancy firm.
A. de Lecea held senior management positions at the European Commission until 2018, most recently focusing on economic growth and international economic and financial integration. He spent six years in Washington as Economic and Finance Minister at the Delegation (Embassy) of the European Union to the USA during the Greek and euro area debt crises. During the global financial crisis, he represented the European Commission and fostered European coordination at G7, G8, G20, IMF, and World Bank senior economic officials fora. Before this, he served as Economic Advisor to the President and held management positions in the EU Budget Department. Before moving to the Commission, he was a member of the Private Office of the Spanish Secretary of State for Finance, in Madrid.
Dr. de Lecea has been a Visiting Senior Fellow at the National University of Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy in 2016-2017. He holds a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of Louvain and a degree in Economics from the Barcelona Autonomous University. He has guest lectured at top US and Asian universities and published in the areas of public finance and European and international economy.
